And speaking of Sophia Tolstoy, her diaries are just so depressing.
“I am to gratify his pleasure and nurse his child, I am a piece of household furniture, I am a woman. I try to suppress all human feelings. When the machine is working properly it heats the milk, knits a blanket, makes little requests and bustles about trying not to think […].“
She wrote this when she was 19, one year into her marriage to Leo and as she was pregnant with the first of his 13 children.
A few years later, when she was 25 or so:
“I am so often alone with my thoughts that the need to write in my diary comes quite naturally … Now I am well again and not pregnant—it terrifies me how often I have been in that condition. He said that for him being young meant “I can achieve anything”. For me […] reason tells me that there is nothing I either want or can do beyond nursing, eating, drinking, sleeping, and loving and caring for my husband and babies, all of which I know is happiness of a kind, but why do I feel so woeful all the time, and weep as I did yesterday? I am writing this now with the pleasantly exciting sense that nobody will ever read it, so I can be quite frank with myself […].“
During her 12th pregnancy she wrote about taking scalding baths and jumping from high pieces of furniture to try and miscarry. And at one point while reading her husband’s diary (which he told her to read) she found the sentence “There is no such thing as love, only the physical need for intercourse and the practical need for a life companion.” In her own diary she wrote “They ebb and flow like waves, these times when I realise how lonely I am and want only to cry…”
A few years before her husband’s death, she published a cycle of prose poems titled “Groans”, under the pseudonym “A Tired Woman”.
the most depressing quote from her diaries:
“I have served a genius for almost forty years. Hundreds of times I have felt my intellectual energy stir within me and all sorts of desires – a longing for education, a love of music and the arts… And time and again I have crushed and smothered these longings… Everyone asks, “But why should a worthless woman like you need an intellectual or artistic life?” To this question I can only reply: “I don’t know, but eternally suppressing it to serve a genius is a great misfortune.”
They say they were just “cleaning up the polls” of people who haven’t voted in over three years, but I wonder how many names of people who did vote recently were “accidentally” included in the wipe.
Even if you voted in the last election, please go check your status. These changes happened over the weekend in early September.
If your not registered to vote, register
And if you are registered to vote, keep double checking that this is still the case (And if it’s not, re-register)
I know it’s annoying but it doesn’t take long to do and honestly with all the blatant dirty tricks the Republicans are pulling and their complete disregard for the law it’s better to be safe than sorry…
Can anyone explain to me any real reason to purge voter rolls? Like, it’s one thing if they drop people who haven’t voted in a decade or something. But there’s just no need to do this so much. Except it’s the only way Republicans win. Because they’re corrupt fucks.
Iwillvote.com allows you to check if you are still registered to vote or to registerif you needd to.
1- in GA, please note that this was in 2017. Go to https://www.mvp.sos.ga.gov/MVP/mvp.do to check whether you’re registered, and where to vote. GA has done a lot of closing of polling places in the name of ‘consolidating’ and ‘cost cutting,’ so be especially sure to check the polling place part.
2. The asshole who did the purging – Sec. of State Kemp – thinks he should be governor. Remember to tell him he’s wrong.
The page that Zemo reads from is supposed to contain the trigger words. But it also seems that there’s a drawing of an eye with instructions and explanations and the note on the bottom of the left page says “7 …(adjective, the kind of stitches I assume) stitches are situated relative to the center of the eye”. So imagine they had to operate on Bucky to ensure that those trigger words stick, among other horrible things. Now excuse me, I’m gonna go cry in the corner.
!!! that is actually a very scary addition to the theory. I was thinking about that head clamp plate thingy too, who knows what kinds of horrors Hydra was putting Bucky through :
On a related note, my theory was that Zemo’s imperfect pronunciation and
word mix-up (доброкачественный is not добросердечный) did not tap into
the cognitive-behavioral conditioning as successfully as an exact
emulation of Karpov’s routine would’ve. And maybe Karpov kept saying
ржавОй instead of ржАвый, in a socio-regional pronunciation variant, on
purpose, to develop a failsafe for 100% efficient long-term Winter
Soldier activation that no one else would be able to master.
If the stimulus is not just audio-channel based, but audio-visual (requiring, say, special lighting, or the handler standing in a specific place in Bucky’s range of vision), then it’s clear Zemo just did not read the instruction manual carefully before proceeding.
Bottom right page, with number 4, says something like связь… слов… стимулирование…глаза, probably something about the stimulation of the eye [retina] in conjunction with code words?
tbh I still think that доброкачественный vs добросердечный was a mistake on their part (like, why can’t you find actual Russian peeps to consult???), so I never read much into that particular bit. But it could be interesting if the word choice was intentional. And maybe Karpov kept saying
ржавОй instead of ржАвый, in a socio-regional pronunciation variant, on
purpose,
I’m not sure how people pronounce it in Siberia, but I think it’s the same? So, again, I think it’s just their mistake. I can’t see any of your suggestions under number 4 though?? I can only see семь матрасных швов (“seven matress stitches”) etc. But it’d be cool to, given the chance, ask the set designers or the Russos to clarify this bit.
now this is a goddamn catch O_O
wasn’t the prop master for Marvel studios sharing images or a video clip of the notebook on social media? I could have sworn I saw that.
is this it?? its from ‘Russell Bobbitt’ at ‘marvelprops’
First of all, thanks for bringing back ALL THE PAIN Q__Q
Yes, I saw that video, but it’s too low quality for me to see anything :C
i just love this, because i never actually considered why that part of the head thing went over his eye, and what it might be effecting.
like, ive spent so much time thinking about the arm and how that might be connected and anchored, but not what might have been done outside of just the electricity and saying the words while that’s effecting his brain. like… eye surgery??? thats some hardcore shit
And to make everything worse – It started all the way back in Azzano, because after Steve saved Bucky the first time, you could see some scratches around his left eye.
Article 13 will come. There will be upload filters. There’s no way for the parliament to stop it now. You have the European Council and the European Parliament. Both discuss now about the new copyright, but they can only change stuff, where they both disagree. Both approved of Article 13 though, so they can’t change that any longer.
Don’t message your MP any longer. They can’t do anything now. Message your government. The European governments are the only ones, who can stop it now.
The new law is clearly intended for Facebook and Google. It only applies to companies with more than 50 employees. And it clearly applies to platforms, not private persons. For us this means if Tumblr has more than 50 employees, we’re fucked. If not it wouldn’t apply.
The MPs that are for the law really think that upload filter don’t need to happen, because they didn’t say they have to. They think there’s another technical solution that can only filter the stuff that is copyrighted, but will still allow stuff that is clearly a meme or art or satire based on it. (Hint. There isn’t and there can’t be.)
The German MPs that voted for it, did so, because the law entails good laws for small artists that sell their copyright, among other things. Article 14-16 allows them to re-negotiate if the new copyright holder basically duped them. For example a writer writes something that becomes a bestseller, then they can re-negotiate to get more. Or a company doesn’t use the copyright, so the original artists doesn’t get anything, then they can claim their copyright back.
If the law happens you can’t cite anything any longer. Nothing. Writing headlines from newsarticles will be forbidden in the worst case.
Google uses the headlines for their search and you can see those and a few summarising words. Based on that you decide if you click a link (and give money to the newssite/publishers) or not. Publishers want to get paid for that from google/facebook. He thinks that is bollocks, because if you go to a news agent you can read the headlines and decide if you want to buy or not. Same should apply to the internet, but now they make you pay to read the headlines. The publishers try to get money for stuff that they never got money for.
He thinks there should be some fair use and that the law simply isn’t fit in the way it was drafted.
What happens now: European council and European parliament negotiate their different positions (as they agree on article 13, they don’t negotiate that at all.) By the end of the year/early next year they’ll probably have a combined position. Then the parliament will vote again if they agree with the changes made. (From his position they will definitely do so. It’s only a technicality.) Then (and that’s the only point where we still might have influence) all 27 member states have to agree on it. So that’s why you have to message your national government!
THIS POST WOULDN’T BE POSSIBLE WITH THE NEW COPYRIGHT LAW AS I SUMMARISE COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL AND SHARE THE CONTENT ON THE INTERNET WITHOUT HAVING PAID THE COPYRIGHT HOLDER.
Along with the first piece of concept art from the upcoming reboot, Netflix announced that The Last Airbender’s co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are both signed on to oversee the show, something they’ve been planning on for ages.
In a public statement, DiMartino and Konietzko expressed their excitement about the upcoming show and made a point of stating that this incarnation of the Aang’s story will star characters of color, unlike M. Night Shyamalan’s much-maligned 2010 The Last Airbender:
“We’re thrilled for the opportunity to helm this live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. We can’t wait to realize Aang’s world as cinematically as we always imagined it to be, and with a culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast.
It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to build upon everyone’s great work on the original animated series and go even deeper into the characters, story, action, and world-building. Netflix is wholly dedicated to manifesting our vision for this retelling, and we’re incredibly grateful to be partnering with them.”
The new series will be created in partnership with Nickelodeon and will start production in 2019. [x][x]
I never asked – never wanted – to be Captain America. But that mask, those stars and stripes, that shield…they change you. I can see now the burden that Steve’s always carried. And it feels strange to admit I want that burden back… But underneath it all, what I really know is…I want to deserve it…somehow.
Also, I’m in Europe and ngl, had no idea this was even an article up for debate let alone it being fucking passed.
Don’t panic! This was expected at this stage and it is only the beginning. If you are a European and feel passionate about this, please keep on reading and help!
So what has happened so far … the Commission has drafted up a long overdue copyright reform. https://eur-lex.europa.eu/procedure/EN/2016_280 It contains a lot of good, and some bad: mainly Article 11 and 13.
This was put forward as a whole to the European Parlament, where it was voted down on the 5th of July 2018
This meant, this will not go through the fast way, and will be subject to scrutiny and change.
The Commission made some alterations https://eur-lex.europa.eu/procedure/EN/2016_280 and put it forward again. If Parlament would have voted it down again, it probably would have meant back to the drawing board, but most people (including me) agree that Europe does need copyright reform, so on the second vote it passed the first step:
So what happens now?
This will now go into what is called the Trilogue, where Commission, Parlament and representatives of all national governments will sit together to make alterations until everybody is happy implementing the regulation.
This means we can now influence this via our MEPs and our National Government!
If countries that are red your government is likely to support Article 13.
What to do now?
There are a lot of organisations that organise actions against article 13. Check out their websites and get in touch with your MEP or local government and let them know you are unhappy about this.
… and many many more, just google to find one in your country.
Also, as @asthesea-breezehitsmylungs pointed out, a lot of people are not aware of this going on. So make them aware! Share the memes and point them to the petitions. And don’t just complain how shit this is, get in touch with your politicians!
