WHAT TO DO AT AN ICE CHECKPOINT, ESPECIALLY IF YOU’RE A WHITE CITIZEN

(please, please, please copy, paste, and share widely):

-Border Patrol can verify citizenship within 100 miles of a border or “external boundary.” This includes coastlines so NYC is within the 100-mile zone.

-Border patrol can only ask brief questions about citizenship, and they cannot hold you for an extended time without cause.

-You always have the right to remain silent. You do not need to answer their questions.

-***WITH THAT SAID, IF YOU ARE A BORN CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES AND ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE WHITE, YOU NEED TO SPEAK THE FUCK UP.***

-The most important acts of resistance are the small ones. Make it difficult and uncomfortable for ICE agents to do their jobs. They are counting on citizens to turn a blind eye and allow them to deport undocumented citizens without challenge. Disabuse of that notion.

-If you are on a train, bus, or anything else and ICE or CBP boards, you need to stand up and loudly let everyone know that they have the right to remain silent or only answer questions in the presence of an attorney, no matter their citizenship or immigration status. There have been numerous reports that confronting the agents in this way has caused them to leave without verifying citizenship. THIS CAN SAVE LIVES.

-If you see anyone being held up by immigration, loudly ask if they are being detained and if they are free to go.

-Immigration officers cannot detain anyone without reasonable suspicion, an agent must have specific facts about you that make it reasonable to believe you are committing or committed, a violation of immigration law or federal law.

If an agent detains you, you can ask for their basis for reasonable suspicion, and they should tell you.

-Always say no to a search and let everyone know that they can and should refuse consent to a search.

-They cannot search or arrest anyone without facts about that make it probable that they are committing, or committed, a violation of immigration law or federal law.

-Silence alone meets neither of these standards. Nor does race or ethnicity alone suffice for either probable cause or reasonable suspicion

-As white citizens, we have a level of privilege which protects us from retaliation from ICE for being “rude” and making a scene, which makes it our DUTY to speak up and make sure people without the same privilege know their rights. GET LOUD. YELL. YELL IN SPANISH IF YOU KNOW IT. LET PEOPLE KNOW THEY DON’T HAVE TO SAY SHIT. MAKE ICE UNCOMFORTABLE. THROW SAND IN THE GEARS OF WHITE SUPREMACY.

BONUS INFO:

-It is perfectly legal to record immigration agents as long as you are not on government property or at a port of entry. If your train/bus gets board, pull your phone out and start videotaping immediately.

-If you are detained or see someone getting detained, get the agent’s name, number, and any other identifying information. Get it on tape.

-Contact the ACLU if you see someone’s rights being violated.

Make it difficult and uncomfortable for ICE agents to do their jobs.

I keep thinking about an article I read several years ago about how activists got a coal plant shut down when the corporation wanted it to have its license extended for another 20 years. No-one knew who should take credit for the win – the lawyers suing for health reasons, the lawyers suing for worker protections, the activists protesting politicians and corporate offices, the activists who chained themselves to the plant gates, the group who pressured banks to refuse loans for the plant, etc. A while later someone read the company’s annual report and it more or less said they’d cancelled the plant, not because of any single reason, but because all the difficulties across so many aspects of the project made it more trouble than it was worth. They could win on one or two problems, but not a dozen attacks at once, especially when they were all weary from fighting the last battle. I wish I could find the article again, it was much more interesting than I make it sound!

But in the same way that people here keep reminding us all that this is a marathon and not a sprint, I think it’s important to attack Trump and the Republicans on all fronts rather than try to find the one perfect sniper shot to take them down. There should not be a single aspect of their working life where they can escape protests and delays and being overruled by courts and new lawsuits and bad publicity and stupid jokes about them and investigations into their affairs. Washington? Investigators and lawsuits. Home town on recess? Angry locals. Media? Questions about what they knew and when. Internet? Demands for healthcare and video compilations of them saying daft things.

It’s not that one of those tactics is a silver bullet, it’s that this is a war of attrition and every little bit of hassle is worth it. Every individual Republican congressperson should be dreading the sound of a phone or notification because it will be yet another fire they have to put out. They shouldn’t have time to provide assistance to their colleagues or cover for Trump, or time out to refresh and regroup. There are more citizens than there are politicians – tag team until they break ranks.

This Metafilter comment is good and smart and makes me feel better about the work ahead of us.

Ray Frenden reviews the too-cheap-to-be-true Monoprice graphics tablets. How do they stack up to industry standard Wacoms?

After spending a week with the 6.25“x10” Monoprice, my Yiynova and Cintiq remain unplugged and I gave my Intuos away to a friend. The Monoprice tracks subtle pressure variances and small movements with less lag and more crisp fidelity than any of the others. It is, put crudely, fucking awesome, in both OSX Lion and Windows 7 x64.

Duly fuckin’ noted.

I’ve had my $80, 3.5×5” gaphire 4 for 5 years now, and have been absolutely dreading the day it finally kicks the bucket. (Yes, every digital piece I’ve ever drawn has been on a live area the size of a postcard.)

I am so getting one of these when this thing dies. Or maybe when the stylus dies… thing’s hanging on by a thread. (Let’s just say it’s been without a grip or buttons for I don’t know how many years now.)

Yay for companies not having a veritable monopoly on the market.

I have one of these, 10×6.5 I bought about two months ago for 48 bucks. It’s a billion times better than my old Wacom Bamboo and works like a fuckin dream.

ive been reading a hell of a lot stucky fics to balm the pain of infinity war

so please enjoy the list ive complied

your favorite ghost – augustbird

It’s harder than Steve ever expected to bring Bucky home.

the gravedigger’s handbook – idrilka

Sometimes it’s the most difficult thing, coming home. They both learn that, in their own ways. (In the end, Bucky comes back to Steve. In the end, it is all that matters.)

pull apart the dark – togina

Steve’s unending faith in his best friend was beginning to look less like hope and more like fantasy. When they’d caught the Soldier – in a firefight that still gave Sam nightmares – the only thing the man seemed to recall was how to hit exactly where it hurt.

Four months later, Barnes still refused to speak English. Refused to heed anything but Steve’s voice.

So, all in all, it was not a great time for Hydra to attack New York. All in all, Sam really wished they’d just killed him, instead of turning Captain America into a baby.

Even with a Million Chances I Wouldn’t be Enough to Deserve You – AppleJuiz

Bucky feels fairly confident when he decides not only is this the Worst Day Ever, but there is no way he can feel worse than right now. You would think that by now, he’d know things can always get worse.

As if getting falsely accused of bombing the UN, having his reunion with Steve go a million times worse than anticipated, and becoming the Winter Soldier again for a brief spell wasn’t enough, Bucky gets to relive it all… over and over again.

I can’t remember how this started (but I can tell you exactly how it ends) – gwyneth rhys (gwyneth)

“And this is the thing, Steve. I would rather relive this day for eternity than watch them win and you die, or see you be enslaved to them the way I was.”

The Difference A Day Makes – twinagonies

In which Bucky lives the same day over and over again, and circling, circling, comes back to himself.

What were some of the design’s most challenging aspects?

“A lot of the initial development was done trying to figure out how much of his face was going to be revealed and come up with a mask that could break apart into goggles and the lower mask. The first time you see him, you wouldn’t see enough of him that Steve would be able to recognize him. Then you have other options to slowly reveal him, and have bits and pieces of it come off in different scenes so that his identity would be concealed until the moment of the reveal. And I was always interested in finding ways to do the domino mask without really doing the domino nask – doing the face paint and blackening around his eyes so that it reads like the mask.” – Ryan Meinerding, Head of Visual Development (Art by Ryan Meinerding)
