AO3 just posted an update on how it could be affected after the recent vote. basically it is definitely bad for the environment of creativity, but it’s not the end right now – and it’s important as much as we can now we channel concerns intoaction because in the run up to the final vote and we can influence the outcome for the future of creative works and for our fandom experiences!!!
the post AO3 made is a really good outline for people to read and catch up on what’s going on, and see how they can help.
First off, this is not a political post. This is a scam awareness post. Please take a moment to notify your family and friends with a reminder that they do not need to give personal information to third party “organizations” offering voter assistance services. Many of these services are data mining operations masquerading as political action groups.
I could just end with “do not give your personal information to these companies, they are not ethical organizations. I highly recommend you instead use a non-committal organization like NonProfitVOTE.org or Vote.gov to get this information.”
But I also don’t want this to look like some lazy grab for attention or be accused of sowing voter discontent. This is, after all, a pretty serious claim to make. I will need to take the time to explain why data mining like this is highly dangerous to your personal identity security and provide lots of visuals showing these organizations admitting they are storing all information provided to them.
Unfortunately, they’ve already partnered with several popular social media platforms like Twitter, Reddit, and Facebook, and these companies are hard-coding notifications to use their services into CSS overlays to circumvent your ad-blocker.
Put simply…This data-mining operation is going to affect millions.
i just got really good life news, so i decided to celebrate by making a disney hercules au djhfsjdkfh pls forgive the metal arm being on the wrong side
This is not a post I enjoy writing, but I feel like it’s one that I must.
The upcoming Brazilian elections will take place on October 7th. And it saddens me very, very much to say that the candidate currently leading the polls is a far-right extremist.
You can think of Jair Bolsonaro as the Brazilian Donald Trump: he is racist, he is a misogynist, he’s a homophobe, a transphobe, a religious fundamentalist. He’s aggressive, and loud and he is completely unqualified for the job.
Just so that you can understand how bad it is, I’ll list some of the things he has said:
“She doesn’t deserve [to be raped] because she’s very bad, because she’s very ugly. She’s not my type. I’d never rape her. I’m not a rapist, but if I were, I wouldn’t rape her because she doesn’t deserve it.” (he said this about a congresswoman after she criticized the military dictatorship in Brazil, which he admires)
“There is no risk. My sons were very well educated.” (after being asked what he would do if his sons dated a black woman)
“I don’t even think about it. They had a good education. I was a present father, so there’s no risk.” (after being asked what he would feel like if one of his sons was gay)
In 2016, when the congressmen were voting on the impeachment (coup) of the last democratically elected president, Dilma Rousseff, in Brazil (our first female president!), he not only voted for her to be removed from office, but the moment he stated his vote, he praised the man who had tortured Dilma during the military dictatorship, which she fought against.
He has said again and again that he appreciates torture
“The great mistake of the dictatorship was that they tortured and didn’t kill”
And I could go on but I think you got the point.
He’s also against the legalization of abortion in Brazil (here it’s only legal in cases of rape, anencephaly and if there’s risk to the woman’s life), against teaching children about genders and sexualities in schools, against the legalization of marijuana, and he is pro-guns (you cannot legaly own guns here, which is pretty good considering the violence rates in the country).
Also, when I say he is unqualified for the job, I mean it. Despite the fact that he has been a congressman for about 30 years now, he has only had 3 projects approved. He has no idea how economy works and is unable to answer questions that a president should in any interview (he simply says he’ll ask his team when the time comes).
Speaking of his projects, though, one that he tried to pass as law was one that said that SUS (Brazil’s free, public funded health care system) should not be obliged to take care of rape victims. Yes, this is the man we’re dealing with here.
But… We stand a chance of fighting him and beating him. Brazilian elections (for presidents) make sense and the person with the most amount of votes will win. And for this, we literally require that for the candidate to be elected, they must have over 50% of the valid votes. The latest poll (I’m writing this on September 27th) claims that Bolsonaro holds 27% of the votes and the candidate on second place (an amazing option, which you can find more about in this post) holds 21%. This means that these elections will be divided in two phases: the first part will happen on October 7th, and only the two candidates with the biggest number of votes (Brazil has more than two political parties) will face each other on the next part (so that we can be sure one of them will have over 50%). The polls are saying that Bolsonaro would then lose, but it’s a very close call.
We would like to make sure that no surprises happen.
As a Brazilian citizen, as a woman, it pains me so much to see that this man could possibly win the upcoming elections and become the next president of Brazil. Which is why I am making this post.
Many, many people feel the same way that I do. So we decided to do something about it. Black people, women, the LGBT+ community… We have come togehter and we have started using the hashtag #EleNão (#NotHim) and #EleNunca (#NeverHim) as a form of protest and, next Saturday (September 29th), we’ll be going to the streets to say that we do not want him and we do not accept him. I ask that, if you can, you support us in using these hashtags on social media so that we can spread the word about what we’re doing and spread information on how terrible this man is.
Lots of celebrities have already participated: Dua Lipa, Ellen Page, Dan Reynolds, Jesse Williams and probably others I’m forgetting… And now I’m asking you to join in and help us out.
We cannot allow fascism to grow in the world. So, please, do share and do talk about it and I know everyone is living a very difficult, stressful time wherever it is you may live, but please raise awareness for this. We cannot allow this man to have any more power.
