Bad Moon Rising

e / 5433 words (will be 50k+), chapter 1/?

AU – Modern fantasy, werewolf!Bucky, Witch!Steve, Post-Serum Steve Rogers, Winter Soldier Bucky Barnes, witch!Sam, were!nat, Dreamsharing, dreamsex, Canon-Typical Violence, Bottom Bucky Barnes, more plot-specific tags to be added, not a/b/o, Pining

Bucky Barnes is a lot of things:

– a nurse
– the owner of a dorky dog that’s too big for his own good
– a lot older than he looks (by a lot more than you’d guess)
– one of the last born-werewolves of his generation (namely due to point number one)

He’s also one of the most powerful werewolves in New York City, not that he uses that power for more than keeping up with his work and playing with his dog.

But, when the once-in-two-hundred-years lunar event known to wolves as the Triple Moon comes along, Bucky’s more than a little peeved to get to Central Park to find cloud cover blocking the majority of the power the moon is supposed to be giving him.

And then he finds an unconscious man in a clearing.

He doesn’t connect the two, though in retrospect he should have – witches are sneakier than they appear.

The internet could change next week, and not in a good way

You may have heard about the efforts in Europe to reform copyright law. The debate has been ongoing in the European Parliament for months. If approved next week, these new regulations would require us to automatically filter and block content that you upload without meaningful consideration of your right to free expression.

We respect the copyrights and trademarks of others, and we take all reports seriously to ensure that your creative expression is protected. We make this clear in our Community Guidelines. There’s already a legal framework that works and is fair: Today we take down posts and media that contain allegedly infringing content when we receive a valid DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) takedown request. We also provide clear-cut ways for people to fight back if they believe their removed content was not a true violation. These instances are monitored and reported and live in our biannual transparency report

The suggestion to use automated filters for issues of copyright is short-sighted at best and harmful at worst. Automated filters are unable to determine whether a use should be considered “fair use” under the law and are unable to determine whether a use is authorized by a license agreement. They are unable to distinguish legitimate parody, satire, or even your own personal pictures that could be matched with similar photographs that have been protected by someone else. We don’t believe that technology should replace human judgment.

Tumblr is and always has been a place for creative expression, and these new regulations would only make it harder for you to express yourself with the freedom and clarity you do so now.

If you access Tumblr from Europe and want to act, you can find more information on saveyourinternet.eu

Please reblog this as much as you reblogged the posts about Net Neutrality.

If Article 13 is approved, European People might be basically banned from uploading any fan content.

You won’t get new fanfics from people in Europe.

You won’t get new gifs from people in Europe.

You won’t get new fanart from people in Europe.

Because they’ll be automatically filtered and blocked!

We might leave Tumblr and other fandom pages.

And if we’re getting all our content blocked?

You might lose some of your favourite followers/mutuals.

You might not get to read the rest of that fic you’re dying to read – simply because the writer lives in the wrong country.

So do whatever you can to help us stop this.

bepis-boii:

Article 13 is going into it’s final stages of voting.

If this gets through, it will allow many, many companies to abuse and misuse this article to take down as many memes, fan works, and even other independent creators on sites like YouTube, Facebook, and other websites INCLUDING Tumblr.

THE FAIR USE LAW AND SAFEHARBOR LAW WILL NO LONGER APPLY IN THE U.S OR IN OTHER COUNTRIES.

IT HAS ALREADY PASSED IN SEVERAL OTHER COUNTRIES.

WE CANNOT ALLOW THEM TO TAKE AWAY WHAT WE BUILT FOR THE INTERNET SO FAR.

So here is what you need to do to drag this article down.

1. Spread the word

I can’t stress this enough. The more attention this gets the more people we can get to take this down.

2. Make your own content

Make your own content on the matter and make sure it is clear to others that Article 13 is bad for every internet user involved.

3. If you live anywhere in Europe, contact your MEPs

Ask them if they approve of the article and why. If they do approve of it, try to convince them in a clear, reasonable, and most sensible way possible that this law is BAD.

The article itself is way to vague about what it’s conveying to its people.

Saying that as long as the use of said internet memes or content is good as long as it’s in “good faith.”

We cannot let some shoddy government tell us what we can and cannot post.

FREE SPEECH IS A HUMAN RIGHT. NOT A PRIVILEGE.

Here’s a video on Article 13 that Film Theory made on the matter. It will explain things better than I can.

Farewell online privacy

What happened?

Trump happened.

just get a VPN?

You can’t just tell people to ‘get a VPN (Virtual Private Network)’. Buying a VPN is like buying a house. It’s very very important. Having no VPN or having a ‘wrong’ one can seriously damage your life. Especially for Americans because their privacy laws are garbage. I am going to try explain why you should get a VPN but bare with me, I am from Germany and my English is far from perfect.

Let’s start with a simple test.
Click this link here: https://whatismyipaddress.com/
It will tell your IP adres, your ISP (internet service provider), and your location. The location might not be very accurate, but then again, it’s just a simple website. Imagine what the government can do!

So basically, everyone can find out where you live. But there is more danger. Your ISP. Your ISP logs your every move online and they are required to keep it in case the government wants access to it (or if a 3rd party wants to buy your data (yikes). They have everything. What websites you visit. How long you stay on a website. What you download. Your search terms. European laws are more subtle on this but if you are from the US you are #@*#&, especially because Trump doesn’t support the open internet. It’s scary but maybe in the future you can’t get a job because the recruiter knows your searched on ‘how to deal with depression’ or anythings else that’s supposed to be private because it’s your f*cking right. Or you get a $100k fine because you pirated a movie 15 years ago. You need a VPN. You’re dumb for not using one. but what does a VPN do?

A VPN encrypts all your data so if it were be intercepted no one can ‘crack the code’ and damage your privacy.

Usually being online goes like this (simplified): Your computer —-> ISP (—–> keeps data —–> sells it)

But with a VPN it goes like: Your computer —–> VPN (encrypts data)—–> ISP (ISP can’t see shit)

Furthermore, a VPN hides your IP address and location by giving you another IP address located in Spain for example (you can often choose from a list and change as many times as you want).

Now that you know why you should get a VPN and what is does it is important to educate yourself because people often choose the wrong VPN. VPN providers are also businesses and have to obey the law. If you choose a VPN provider located in the US then you are throwing your money away because the laws in the US shits on your privacy. If the US gov wants the provider to give all their logs they have to obey.  The ISP  still can’t see what you are doing online and sell your data but the US gov can interfere with your VPN provider so NEVER CHOOSE A PROVIDER LOCATED IN THE US.

I just wanted to make that very clear so my followers don’t buy false security.

There is still more danger!
Who says your VPN provider isn’t selling your data? You need to check their logging policy. Do they keep logs? If yes, what for? For how long do they keep them? Tip: Choose a provider who doesn’t keep logs

More about law
The US is part of the Five Eyes program (the worst):

The Five Eyes, often abbreviated as FVEY, is an intelligence alliance comprising Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. These countries are bound by the multilateral UKUSA Agreement, a treaty for joint cooperation in signals intelligence (source)

There is also a Nine Eyes (bit better) and Fourteen Eyes Program (better).
You don’t want a VPN provider who is located in one the Five Eyes countries.
If you had to choose go for a provider located in a country that’s part of the Fourteen Eyes Program or even better, go for a country that isn’t part of any program!

I know this is a shitty explanation and please pardon my english but now it’s time to do your own research. Take your privacy seriously. Maybe WWIII breaks out and you get killed for liking the ‘wrong’ FB-page.

Go to this website: https://thatoneprivacysite.net/simple-vpn-comparison-chart/

Make sure that your future VPN provider both has green boxes for Privacy Jurisdiction and Privacy Logging.

I recommend ovpn.se and trust.zone. ovpn is located in Sweden so they are part of the 14 Eyes Program and they keep minimal logs. Their business ethics, however, are alright.

Trustzone is located in the Seychelles. No country can interfere and their privacy jurisdiction is the best you can get. The US want your data but needs to get it from Trustzone? The Seychelles will simply give them the finger and wave them goodbye. However, this makes this provider very appealing for people who torrent and criminals because they keep no logs (and that is how it shoud be) Also,  there are almost no marketing efforts so this provider is one the cheapest)

Also, often providers such as ExpressVPN are being called ‘The Best’ on websites about VPNs but know that this is just marketing which also makes those provider more expensive (and they too shit on your privacy)

This must be the worst article you have ever read but please, please take your privacy very seriously.

EDIT: I got many people asking me which provider I use. For those who want to know, I use Trust Zone. They offer a free 3-day trial with no strings attached. But still do your own research!

I am also with Trustzone but I think you forgot to explain one of it’s most important features. It protects you when you are using someone else’s Wi-Fi.
If you are at Starbucks and you use their Wi-Fi your privacy is at risk. Anyone with ill intentions could steal your information. Especially if you are using an unsecured Wi-Fi hotspot. With a VPN your data gets encrypted so no one can steal it.

Wait, what’s going, on? Did trump destroy internet privacy with a bill or something? Where’s the news? Oh wait, why am I getting visions of Alex Jones and selling water purifiers?

He hasn’t yet but he says he wants to. And if he is serious about it it would be really easy to do. Since all our data is already recorded, as the person above explained.

Trump wants more surveillance of Muslim Americans. This in a country where internet privacy is already close to non-existent.

Trust.Zone has a free trial. Use it.

btw this post only has 11k notes? That’s quite disappointing for something this important.

Don’t reblog this post to save a life.
Reblog this to protect an entire family!

@earth-ruins @writing-prompt-s Should I get trustzone for my mobile device?

If you use public Wi-Fi, then yes. Which VPN you use is up to you, amigo. Take @earth-ruins advice. Do your own research first.

@elvesfromthedeep just brought the current situation in the US to my attention (March 30, 2017).

Don’t tell me you just wanted to scroll past this. Stop looking at pictures of cats for a moment, okay? Don’t you realize how important this is? This is dangerous! ‘America, the best FREE country in the world’ my ass.

With this new law your ISP can sell your Internet history which could include passwords, usernames, religion, credit card numbers, race and much more to the highest bidder. So here is what I want you to do.

You are going to read the whole thing and before you think ’this is so important. Let me reblog this real quick and go back to admiring cats again-NO! Don’t reblog this. Take action first. Then reblog. Sign up for a free trial! Trust.Zone offers one (here). Yes. It might be difficult to set up a VPN for some people. But is that going to stop you from protecting yourself and your family? 30 minutes. 30 minutes is all that it takes. 5 if you know how to install software. The problem with some of you is that you see ‘difficult’ as something negative. I want you to see difficult differently. I need you to push through this stuff. You are going to protect yourself. There is nothing negative about that.

VPNs are fun and costsaving too! A VPN bypasses geographical restrictions so you can access websites you normally can’t or you could start Netflix’s one month free trial over and over again- forever. And it’s legal! (unless you use it to buy weapons etc.,)

Don’t tell yourself that you are too tired and that you will do this tomorrow. Because that isn’t going to happen and you know it. You have to do this right now. You only have to click on it.
Don’t let this/shit/life just happen to you. Take yourself seriously. Get a VPN.

Privacy is not a privilege, it’s a fundamental human right

Ok sorry that it’s so freaking long and also sorry for the language, but this is extremely important. Please reblog!

Reblogging again bc this is important

Right now they’re having a black friday sale! 75% off!!

Happy Indigenous Peoples Day!

yesstrongwomen:

Across the United States, there are 556 federally recognized American Indian and Alaska Native nations. Each one has it’s own unique history and culture. American education has not bothered to tell us that Native people lived in peace and effectively governed themselves before the Europeans came along. American education has not informed us that Native Americans have been slighted ever since, not even being recognized as citizens (despite the fact that they were here first) until the 20th century.

But we don’t have to push these facts aside. We can stop celebrating a man that began a genocide and a terrible theft of land and culture, and start celebrating Indigenous Peoples for their rich history and their equal contributions to society.

To all Indigenous Peoples out there: we’re glad you’re here!

Can anyone tell me what the clothes are called that Bucky wears in the Black Panther post credits scene? I think I saw some meta going around that discussed the inspiration for the Wakandan clothes somewhere. I need to research what it is (and what he would wear underneath) for a fic. 😉

So I did some research and read the articles you all recommended. Most of the pieces that cover the design of the Wakandan outfits talk about Lesotho inspired blankets. Turns out I can stop trying to find a cooler name cuz they’re officially called ”blankets” and they’re still dope cuz they speak to the culture and history of the person wearing it. W’kabi and his border tribe are wearing it like a cloak over their shoulders or wrapped around their person burrito style:

Now, I thought that Bucky should wear the same style since he’s living with them (his hut seems to be besides a remote lake but the surrounding huts all look very similar to the ones we see earlier in the movie when T’challa visits W’kabi in his village so it must be close by unless it’s Nakia’s river tribe home which seems unlikely with their green color scheme and all) BUT Bucky’s clothes looked much lighter in comparison to W’kabis: They alsoseem to have a different style so I looked for other cultures that inspired the Black Panther costume department team and found this picture of Maasai warriors on pinterest:

Source: (x)

Source 2: (x)

These outfits look very similar to Bucky’s. Bear with my ugly arrows that will hopefully make sense at the end of this. I could’t just take one picture of this beautiful man and move on. Nope:

So, the red cloth is called a “shúkà” or “shuka”. Both Bucky and the Maasai warrior have the red color that’s typical for traditional Maasai clothing and the lighter fabric compared to the Lesotho blankets. Bucky even wears a similar belt to the warrior in the first picture.

The fabric also has checks on it like the warriors in the second picture (especially the one on the right) which is common among the Maasai according to this site:

“The Maasai shuka is another type of cloth that is used here in northern Tanzania. They are usually checkered or plaid, although some designs are striped. They are brightly colored, with red being the most popular color. Heavier and thicker than kanga, kitenge or kikoi, they are usually made from acrylic rather than cotton. The Maasai men wear them draped over one shoulder or wrapped around their waists. They are also used as shawls, blankets and table clothes, among other things.” (x)

Most of my arrows here point at the light striped fabric Bucky is wearing underneath because it’s hard to catch unless you watch it frame by frame or see a close up:

I noticed that the light red fabric is peaking out at his collarbone and goes all the way down to his calfs. It looks like he’s actually turned that shuka into pants that he wears under the outer one. Regulation? I don’t think so but it could also be a normal variation. What do I know? You can see the pant legs in the first and last two pictures when he walks.

I’m guessing this functions as the underwear of his outfit as well. Like some kind of traditional underwear jumpsuit. According to my reasearch it’s common to wear a finer fabric underneath the outer shuka which is less cherished and more resiliant but I’ve seen pictures where there’s no underwear in western style or a shuka under the outer one visible. Like this for instance:

Source 3: (x)

If you need the info to undress Bucky in fanfics I’d say you’re good to write whatever. The underwear rules are still unclear to me. Modern Maasai seem to wear boxer briefs sometimes but maybe it’s a question of the climate or something? I’m starting to feel like a creep every time I open google to check so I’ve probably seen enough examples.

Of course I wondered why Marvel can’t just dressed him in a blanket like the other border tribe members and make my life easier, considering that it makes him stand out so much but then I noticed that his neighors had the same kind of outfit and I came up with some theories:

I think that the shuka is probably much better suited for farm work, so everyone in the picture wears a similar style. My other guess is that they decided to use it for Bucky specifically because it’s easier to handle with one arm. I figure it doesn’t put as much weight on his left shoulder (only the scarf protects it) so it’s a good choice for him and it gives him this traditional warrior connotation with the red. From a psychological perspective, because the shuka is usually worn draped over one shoulder, the Wakandans might have intended to make him feel more “whole” if he could wear clothes that are naturally supposed to leave one side exposed but that’s just another wild guess.

I think it’s interesting to notice what he doesn’t wear, too: There’s no jewelry. Maasai men combine this kind of outfit with beaded bracelets but maybe that was too much for Marvel with the man bun and everything. For footwear, they wear sandals so that should be Bucky’s go to footwear, too, but he’s barefoot in the BP clip. Maybe that speaks to his whole new born hippy vibe? I don’t know. Last but not least, Maasai men also carry a stick or a small sword (called olalem or “Ol Alem”) with them but Bucky is unarmed as far as I can see. I figure if he wanted a weapon at hand he could be armed with something like an olalem when he’s out on the farm. It looks kinda cool:

I’m not gonna do a whole analysis here but it seemed worth it to note that he wears Western clothes again while working when T’challa and Okoye bring him the new arm. Except for the shawl maybe that’s still in this older style. It’s hard to tell if he’s armed. It’s definately a very different look though from the Maasai inspired Jesus glow up to the greasy man with torn sleve and all.

Anyways, I think I’ve done enough meta to feel satisfied for now. 😉 Just thought I’d share my findings with you all.

If this post is dicriminating against the Maasai or African culture in any way, I’m very sorry. I don’t have a lot of actual knowledge about it so this is not 100% reliable. It’s all just random info I could find in articles and pictures so far.

For reference, here’s a better picture of Bucky’s Infinity War farming outfit

So, for further reference and because I can’t stop obsessing over this, I was a fool. I should have looked at the individual Wakandan tribes and their main inspiration in real life to begin instead of looking up fabrics. It would have made my life much easier but in my defense, there wasn’t much research and background information posted about it after Black Panther came out and I wrote the beginning of this meta post. I also can’t format the sources properly anymore for some reason… Writing is hard.

So anyways, I watched the movie again and I noticed that the red color scheme is specific to the Mining Tribe.

The original Maasai reference I found (which can be found way at the top of this post) is basically the base for this guy during the King’s challenge who guards/accompanies the Mining Tribe elder:

(source second picture: http://marvelcinematicuniverse.wikia.com/wiki/Mining_Tribe _)

The man to the warrior’s right wears the same colors with some orange but it’s an overall with pants on the bottom. I guess, this is what Bucky is wearing underneath in the post credits scene because you can see it peak out (scroll upwards to compare the arrows).

The red/orange is pretty specific to the Mining tribe in the film (of course the Dora Milaje and some others wear it, too, but it’s meant as the official color for this tribe). In Wakanda, you can recognize individual tribes who live in different areas and work in different fields by the color or their clothing (blue/green for Nakia’s river tribe, dark blue for the Border tribe, black for the royal Panther tribe and so on).

According to the Marvel Cinematic Universe Wikia the Mining tribe was both inspired by the Maasai and the Himba people.

In Maasai culture, colors have a specific meaning. I found this quote about the color red on a site about traditional Maasai jewelry and thought it was a beautiful symbolism they might have applied to Bucky’s history/recovery and therefor chosen to stick him with the Mining tribe:

“Red: Represents bravery, strength, unity and the incredible challenges Maasai people face each day.” (source: https://beadsofesiteti.com/symbolism-of-maasai-jewelry/)

Other than the clothes, it makes sense that Bucky is staying with the Mining tribe in the post credits scene because the Himba people who inspired the design are traditional farmers and Bucky tending to the goats in Infinity War has become the second “plum craving” insider of the fandom.

“The men’s main tasks are tending to the livestock farming, herding where the men will often be away from the family home for extended periods, animal slaughtering, construction, and holding council with village tribal chiefs. […]

The OvaHimba are predominantly livestock farmers who breed fat-tailed sheep and goats, but count their wealth in the number of their cattle. They also grow and farm rain-fed crops such as maize and millet. Livestock are the major source of milk and meat for the OvaHimba. Their diet is also supplemented by cornmeal, chicken eggs, wild herbs and honey.” (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Himba_people _)

There you have the reference to Bucky’s new occupation as a farmer and goat herder as well as some insides to what his diet might be.

The Himba homes I found also look very similar to the hut Bucky lives in.

(source: https://www.wangechigitahitravels.com/culture-extravaganza-in-opuo/dsc_1280/_)

Because the colors and style of clothing are so different in Infinity War, at first I wondered if they moved Bucky from the Mining tribe to the River tribe at some point but I changed my mind about that. The children still wear the same clothes as in the post credits scene. I just think it’s not the same hut anymore.

In Black Panther, the hut Bucky was sleeping in was located just at the edge of the lake. It’s possible that he was staying with a Mining Tribe family in the post credits scene, using the hut as a guest house.

Considering that a significant amount of time must have passed between BP and Infinity War, he could have build this hut and the fence for himself. It looks just small enough for one and I imagine he’d like to live a little farer away from the other huts for some piece and quiet and because he can see people coming from a distance.

T’challa and Okoye presumably travelled to Bucky from the capitol (the golden city) which should be in the opposite direction when they walk down a hill to get to him and present him with the new arm. The lake is much more far away from Bucky’s hut here compared to BP (top right corner of the frame) but you can see that it’s not a huge lake which is consistent with the BP post credits scene.

I’m still trying to figure out where this lake and Bucky’s hut are located exactly but I’m not sure what kind of map they used (Wakanda and its location is all over the place in different MCU movies) so I’m going with this one where the tribes are marked:

(source: https://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/181950/where-is-wakanda-in-the-mcu)

Bucky should be located somewhere around the area with the light blue dot on the bottom that says “Mining Tribe” (I hope I read that correctly, the quality is poor).

If everyone was wearing a different color, I’d still say Bucky’s with the River Tribe (dark blue dot) left of the capitol but well… That’s not what the meta says.

I’m not prepared to say Marvel didn’t care about the the locations or the tribe color and style of Bucky’s clothes in Infinity War anymore but perhaps they just wanted to emphasize his glow up later by giving him muted worn out Western clothes to make him more recognizable to a general audience and emphasize the “rugged farmer’s look” Western audiences are familiar with. I’m gonna let that slide.

T’challa and Okoye travelled all the way there by quintet and then went on foot for the last part to make a dramatic entrance or more likely, so they wouldn’t startle Bucky by flying in, I suppose. Maybe the long journey back to the capitol is why Bucky had to get so properly washed and hair conditioned instead of keeping the farm boy sweat?

Him being really far away from the golden city also explains why Bucky’s so fascinated with the capitol’s defenses later because he’d never actually spend any time there or had a proper look. “Where is the fight?” might not be a rhetorical question in this case.

Again, I enjoyed learning more about the real and fictional culture I based this meta on. However, I collected all my information from the internet for fandom purposes only. This is not a reliable source on the Maasai and Himba people. Please treat with caution and respect.

Really? It’d be a shame if everyone kept circulated this story and reminded people until he leaves.

Remember, this isn’t just a matter of a pen name. He invented a whole damn person, lied to colleagues and supervisors told them that he was receiving work from this person, and pointed to the nonexistent writer as an example of the diversity and inclusiveness at Marvel—while using the lie to write some of the most godawful stereotypical shit about Japanese characters, protecting himself by claiming it was a Japanese person writing it.
