(and yes, I accidentally wrote “Bucky” twice in the header. I don’t know how that happened…)

Showcasing the extent of Bucky’s muscle damage that has been replaced with metal.

‘That is some HARDCORE MUSCLE DAMAGE, and I have no idea how to get around that. Have those muscles been replaced with synthetic versions of themselves? This makes the most sense to me, although it isn’t entirely consistent with the design, because some of those muscles are clearly articulated parts of the arm itself. Does that mean the muscles have been replaced with articulated metal that’s been implanted under his skin? Probably. -therealdeepsix

The more I watch the scene with Phillips telling Steve they’re not going to rescue anyone, the more I feel Phillips is playing him. “Nope, we’re not going to go after them, because – and let me point out very clearly and specifically on this map exactly where they are – it is in dangerous territory and I will not order anyone to go in there”.

“Incidentally, Rogers, I know you have hero-issues coming out the wazoo and you want to be respected as a soldier and a man, so I will diss you to your face, call you a chorus girl, and basically wind you up to the point that you do something damned reckless and stupid without orders, because you’re the kind of dumbass hero who will jump on a grenade for your fellow-man or chase down an armed man while unarmed and barefoot in your shorts and I know this because I watched you do it before.”

“And Carter, if you’re about to say something, just don’t, because no one needs to know that I know exactly what I’m doing. It’s called ‘dance, monkey, dance’. And if he dies, wasn’t on my orders.”

You notice that he’s not exactly surprised about Steve being Captain Dumbass Hero. You’ll notice he’s also not massively surprised when Steve returns.

Colonel Chester Phillips. Didn’t get to be head of the SSR because he’s just a pretty face.

Importing this, since Phillips needs more love.

Can anyone tell me what the clothes are called that Bucky wears in the Black Panther post credits scene? I think I saw some meta going around that discussed the inspiration for the Wakandan clothes somewhere. I need to research what it is (and what he would wear underneath) for a fic. 😉

So I did some research and read the articles you all recommended. Most of the pieces that cover the design of the Wakandan outfits talk about Lesotho inspired blankets. Turns out I can stop trying to find a cooler name cuz they’re officially called ”blankets” and they’re still dope cuz they speak to the culture and history of the person wearing it. W’kabi and his border tribe are wearing it like a cloak over their shoulders or wrapped around their person burrito style:

Now, I thought that Bucky should wear the same style since he’s living with them (his hut seems to be besides a remote lake but the surrounding huts all look very similar to the ones we see earlier in the movie when T’challa visits W’kabi in his village so it must be close by unless it’s Nakia’s river tribe home which seems unlikely with their green color scheme and all) BUT Bucky’s clothes looked much lighter in comparison to W’kabis: They alsoseem to have a different style so I looked for other cultures that inspired the Black Panther costume department team and found this picture of Maasai warriors on pinterest:

Source: (x)

Source 2: (x)

These outfits look very similar to Bucky’s. Bear with my ugly arrows that will hopefully make sense at the end of this. I could’t just take one picture of this beautiful man and move on. Nope:

So, the red cloth is called a “shúkà” or “shuka”. Both Bucky and the Maasai warrior have the red color that’s typical for traditional Maasai clothing and the lighter fabric compared to the Lesotho blankets. Bucky even wears a similar belt to the warrior in the first picture.

The fabric also has checks on it like the warriors in the second picture (especially the one on the right) which is common among the Maasai according to this site:

“The Maasai shuka is another type of cloth that is used here in northern Tanzania. They are usually checkered or plaid, although some designs are striped. They are brightly colored, with red being the most popular color. Heavier and thicker than kanga, kitenge or kikoi, they are usually made from acrylic rather than cotton. The Maasai men wear them draped over one shoulder or wrapped around their waists. They are also used as shawls, blankets and table clothes, among other things.” (x)

Most of my arrows here point at the light striped fabric Bucky is wearing underneath because it’s hard to catch unless you watch it frame by frame or see a close up:

I noticed that the light red fabric is peaking out at his collarbone and goes all the way down to his calfs. It looks like he’s actually turned that shuka into pants that he wears under the outer one. Regulation? I don’t think so but it could also be a normal variation. What do I know? You can see the pant legs in the first and last two pictures when he walks.

I’m guessing this functions as the underwear of his outfit as well. Like some kind of traditional underwear jumpsuit. According to my reasearch it’s common to wear a finer fabric underneath the outer shuka which is less cherished and more resiliant but I’ve seen pictures where there’s no underwear in western style or a shuka under the outer one visible. Like this for instance:

Source 3: (x)

If you need the info to undress Bucky in fanfics I’d say you’re good to write whatever. The underwear rules are still unclear to me. Modern Maasai seem to wear boxer briefs sometimes but maybe it’s a question of the climate or something? I’m starting to feel like a creep every time I open google to check so I’ve probably seen enough examples.

Of course I wondered why Marvel can’t just dressed him in a blanket like the other border tribe members and make my life easier, considering that it makes him stand out so much but then I noticed that his neighors had the same kind of outfit and I came up with some theories:

I think that the shuka is probably much better suited for farm work, so everyone in the picture wears a similar style. My other guess is that they decided to use it for Bucky specifically because it’s easier to handle with one arm. I figure it doesn’t put as much weight on his left shoulder (only the scarf protects it) so it’s a good choice for him and it gives him this traditional warrior connotation with the red. From a psychological perspective, because the shuka is usually worn draped over one shoulder, the Wakandans might have intended to make him feel more “whole” if he could wear clothes that are naturally supposed to leave one side exposed but that’s just another wild guess.

I think it’s interesting to notice what he doesn’t wear, too: There’s no jewelry. Maasai men combine this kind of outfit with beaded bracelets but maybe that was too much for Marvel with the man bun and everything. For footwear, they wear sandals so that should be Bucky’s go to footwear, too, but he’s barefoot in the BP clip. Maybe that speaks to his whole new born hippy vibe? I don’t know. Last but not least, Maasai men also carry a stick or a small sword (called olalem or “Ol Alem”) with them but Bucky is unarmed as far as I can see. I figure if he wanted a weapon at hand he could be armed with something like an olalem when he’s out on the farm. It looks kinda cool:

I’m not gonna do a whole analysis here but it seemed worth it to note that he wears Western clothes again while working when T’challa and Okoye bring him the new arm. Except for the shawl maybe that’s still in this older style. It’s hard to tell if he’s armed. It’s definately a very different look though from the Maasai inspired Jesus glow up to the greasy man with torn sleve and all.

Anyways, I think I’ve done enough meta to feel satisfied for now. 😉 Just thought I’d share my findings with you all.

If this post is dicriminating against the Maasai or African culture in any way, I’m very sorry. I don’t have a lot of actual knowledge about it so this is not 100% reliable. It’s all just random info I could find in articles and pictures so far.

For reference, here’s a better picture of Bucky’s Infinity War farming outfit

So, for further reference and because I can’t stop obsessing over this, I was a fool. I should have looked at the individual Wakandan tribes and their main inspiration in real life to begin instead of looking up fabrics. It would have made my life much easier but in my defense, there wasn’t much research and background information posted about it after Black Panther came out and I wrote the beginning of this meta post. I also can’t format the sources properly anymore for some reason… Writing is hard.

So anyways, I watched the movie again and I noticed that the red color scheme is specific to the Mining Tribe.

The original Maasai reference I found (which can be found way at the top of this post) is basically the base for this guy during the King’s challenge who guards/accompanies the Mining Tribe elder:

(source second picture: http://marvelcinematicuniverse.wikia.com/wiki/Mining_Tribe _)

The man to the warrior’s right wears the same colors with some orange but it’s an overall with pants on the bottom. I guess, this is what Bucky is wearing underneath in the post credits scene because you can see it peak out (scroll upwards to compare the arrows).

The red/orange is pretty specific to the Mining tribe in the film (of course the Dora Milaje and some others wear it, too, but it’s meant as the official color for this tribe). In Wakanda, you can recognize individual tribes who live in different areas and work in different fields by the color or their clothing (blue/green for Nakia’s river tribe, dark blue for the Border tribe, black for the royal Panther tribe and so on).

According to the Marvel Cinematic Universe Wikia the Mining tribe was both inspired by the Maasai and the Himba people.

In Maasai culture, colors have a specific meaning. I found this quote about the color red on a site about traditional Maasai jewelry and thought it was a beautiful symbolism they might have applied to Bucky’s history/recovery and therefor chosen to stick him with the Mining tribe:

“Red: Represents bravery, strength, unity and the incredible challenges Maasai people face each day.” (source: https://beadsofesiteti.com/symbolism-of-maasai-jewelry/)

Other than the clothes, it makes sense that Bucky is staying with the Mining tribe in the post credits scene because the Himba people who inspired the design are traditional farmers and Bucky tending to the goats in Infinity War has become the second “plum craving” insider of the fandom.

“The men’s main tasks are tending to the livestock farming, herding where the men will often be away from the family home for extended periods, animal slaughtering, construction, and holding council with village tribal chiefs. […]

The OvaHimba are predominantly livestock farmers who breed fat-tailed sheep and goats, but count their wealth in the number of their cattle. They also grow and farm rain-fed crops such as maize and millet. Livestock are the major source of milk and meat for the OvaHimba. Their diet is also supplemented by cornmeal, chicken eggs, wild herbs and honey.” (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Himba_people _)

There you have the reference to Bucky’s new occupation as a farmer and goat herder as well as some insides to what his diet might be.

The Himba homes I found also look very similar to the hut Bucky lives in.

(source: https://www.wangechigitahitravels.com/culture-extravaganza-in-opuo/dsc_1280/_)

Because the colors and style of clothing are so different in Infinity War, at first I wondered if they moved Bucky from the Mining tribe to the River tribe at some point but I changed my mind about that. The children still wear the same clothes as in the post credits scene. I just think it’s not the same hut anymore.

In Black Panther, the hut Bucky was sleeping in was located just at the edge of the lake. It’s possible that he was staying with a Mining Tribe family in the post credits scene, using the hut as a guest house.

Considering that a significant amount of time must have passed between BP and Infinity War, he could have build this hut and the fence for himself. It looks just small enough for one and I imagine he’d like to live a little farer away from the other huts for some piece and quiet and because he can see people coming from a distance.

T’challa and Okoye presumably travelled to Bucky from the capitol (the golden city) which should be in the opposite direction when they walk down a hill to get to him and present him with the new arm. The lake is much more far away from Bucky’s hut here compared to BP (top right corner of the frame) but you can see that it’s not a huge lake which is consistent with the BP post credits scene.

I’m still trying to figure out where this lake and Bucky’s hut are located exactly but I’m not sure what kind of map they used (Wakanda and its location is all over the place in different MCU movies) so I’m going with this one where the tribes are marked:

(source: https://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/181950/where-is-wakanda-in-the-mcu)

Bucky should be located somewhere around the area with the light blue dot on the bottom that says “Mining Tribe” (I hope I read that correctly, the quality is poor).

If everyone was wearing a different color, I’d still say Bucky’s with the River Tribe (dark blue dot) left of the capitol but well… That’s not what the meta says.

I’m not prepared to say Marvel didn’t care about the the locations or the tribe color and style of Bucky’s clothes in Infinity War anymore but perhaps they just wanted to emphasize his glow up later by giving him muted worn out Western clothes to make him more recognizable to a general audience and emphasize the “rugged farmer’s look” Western audiences are familiar with. I’m gonna let that slide.

T’challa and Okoye travelled all the way there by quintet and then went on foot for the last part to make a dramatic entrance or more likely, so they wouldn’t startle Bucky by flying in, I suppose. Maybe the long journey back to the capitol is why Bucky had to get so properly washed and hair conditioned instead of keeping the farm boy sweat?

Him being really far away from the golden city also explains why Bucky’s so fascinated with the capitol’s defenses later because he’d never actually spend any time there or had a proper look. “Where is the fight?” might not be a rhetorical question in this case.

Again, I enjoyed learning more about the real and fictional culture I based this meta on. However, I collected all my information from the internet for fandom purposes only. This is not a reliable source on the Maasai and Himba people. Please treat with caution and respect.

A pretty horrible and creepy thing.

The page that Zemo reads from is supposed to contain the trigger words. But it also seems that there’s a drawing of an eye with instructions and explanations and the note on the bottom of the left page says “7 …(adjective, the kind of stitches I assume) stitches are situated relative to the center of the eye”. So imagine they had to operate on Bucky to ensure that those trigger words stick, among other horrible things. Now excuse me, I’m gonna go cry in the corner.

#I thought they were auditory triggers#not visual#not even a combination of both#but maybe it has to something to do with the electric chair of Suffering#because the head clamp only covers one eye–his left#I always thought that was odd#but since they used the Chair when implementing the trigger words#there could be a visual element as well (via brooklynnbros)

!!! that is actually a very scary addition to the theory. I was thinking about that head clamp plate thingy too, who knows what kinds of horrors Hydra was putting Bucky through :

On a related note, my theory was that Zemo’s imperfect pronunciation and
word mix-up (доброкачественный is not добросердечный) did not tap into
the cognitive-behavioral conditioning as successfully as an exact
emulation of Karpov’s routine would’ve. And maybe Karpov kept saying
ржавОй instead of ржАвый, in a socio-regional pronunciation variant, on
purpose, to develop a failsafe for 100% efficient long-term Winter
Soldier activation that no one else would be able to master.

If the stimulus is not just audio-channel based, but audio-visual (requiring, say, special lighting, or the handler standing in a specific place in Bucky’s range of vision), then it’s clear Zemo just did not read the instruction manual carefully before proceeding.

Bottom right page, with number 4, says something like связь… слов… стимулирование…глаза, probably something about the stimulation of the eye [retina] in conjunction with code words?

tbh I still think that доброкачественный vs добросердечный was a mistake on their part (like, why can’t you find actual Russian peeps to consult???), so I never read much into that particular bit. But it could be interesting if the word choice was intentional.
And maybe Karpov kept saying
ржавОй instead of ржАвый, in a socio-regional pronunciation variant, on
purpose,

I’m not sure how people pronounce it in Siberia, but I think it’s the same? So, again, I think it’s just their mistake. I can’t see any of your suggestions under number 4 though?? I can only see семь матрасных швов (“seven matress stitches”) etc. But it’d be cool to, given the chance, ask the set designers or the Russos to clarify this bit.

now this is a goddamn catch O_O

wasn’t the prop master for Marvel studios sharing images or a video clip of the notebook on social media? I could have sworn I saw that.

is this it?? its from ‘Russell Bobbitt’ at ‘marvelprops’

@secretlytodream is this helpful??

First of all, thanks for bringing back ALL THE PAIN Q__Q

Yes, I saw that video, but it’s too low quality for me to see anything :C

i just love this, because i never actually considered why that part of the head thing went over his eye, and what it might be effecting.

like, ive spent so much time thinking about the arm and how that might be connected and anchored, but not what might have been done outside of just the electricity and saying the words while that’s effecting his brain. like… eye surgery??? thats some hardcore shit

And to make everything worse – It started all the way back in Azzano, because after Steve saved Bucky the first time, you could see some scratches around his left eye.

Now you’re welcome.

“Here he is fighting a million monsters, and an alien tree proclaims “I am Groot!” Cap has seen some weird stuff in his adventures, but he’s never seen a Groot and he’s never heard a Groot. It would be totally believable if he did a double take or expressed any level of “Huh?” But he doesn’t. Instead, he sees Groot, sees how brave Groot is, does not question his heroism, and immediately sees that this alien tree creature deserves every ounce of respect and gratitude he can muster. That’s who Captain America is, a man who listens to and believes in people when they tell him who they are. That’s a lesson we all should take away from that moment.”

So I was thinking about that “Bucky not having a hat” thing; do you think they were testing rudimentary versions of the mind wipe machine the first time he was captured?

meleedamage:

I think it’s a possibility. smarter, more observant people than me have worked out meta on this. A few weeks ago I saw a post about Bucky’s bruising/bleeding after Steve rescues him in ca:tfa

image

and how it compares to Winter Soldier in the chair:

image

(here’s the link)

It’s certainly a compelling argument. Whether or not they tested a rudimentary version of mind wiping technology on him, there’s a lot to be said for the way Bucky dresses before and after his capture. There’s a deliberateness to everything he wears, both from the directors/costumer designers in the movie to Bucky himself, because his clothing certainly does tell a story. There’s been fantastic meta on Bucky’s clothing, too. Let’s take a look at the Bucky we first meet:

image

what a dapper motherfucker.  So pristine, and (mostly) to regulation with his tie and collar just so, with just a little bit of charm and personality shining through with the jaunty angle of his hat.  This is why most people agree that Bucky Barnes cares about his appearance, that he cares about it so much that he used his hat to set himself apart.

image

The next time we see him before he’s captured is the deleted scene where he’s wearing his helmet.  Again, it’s at an angle, but whereas the hat choice is deliberate, I would argue the helmet was donned rapidly. The fact that it isn’t buckled bothered me (like he was being cavalier with his safety/had to look good in the middle of a war zone) until I saw American Sniper, where there was a very similar moment where the sniper finished sniping and then moved to put his helmet on, very quickly with the emphasis on getting it on rather than fitting it properly, and I went ‘ooooh, that could explain it’. Bucky might need to get it on and off quickly so it isn’t obstructing his shooting. I’m sure there’s also a possibility both are for movie purposes too, blocking and face shots etc.

This is the last time we see something on his head until he’s in the mask as the Winter Soldier.

Let’s take a moment to compare Bucky before he’s shipped off, to Bucky post-capture.

image

First of all, no hat. Second, compare this to Bucky done up in full uniform from the first scenes.  We’ve all read the fantastic meta that talks about his mental state in this scene, and I agree with that.  This is a Bucky who can’t bring himself to wear his full regulation uniform.

But take a look.

what

image

other

image

similarity there is

image

Bucky no longer wears anything tight around his neck.

Bucky no longer wears anything tight around his neck.

And suddenly, his outfit in the bar scene becomes more of a focused, deliberate lack of regulation uniform.  He literally cannot bring himself to do up his collar or tie, and it doesn’t get better.

His jacket is never done up fully, just tucked in.  It LOOKS dapper as fuck, and I’m sure he’s aware he looks good in it, but if he picked it out himself as we enjoy speculating, he also picked something he’d be warm in but could also get it away from his neck with a quick tug.  Is this so he can breathe easier? Is it because he actually had something around his head and neck while tortured?  We could get into the possibilities indefinitely.

brb crying over Bucky again

I just want to add that every scene we see him in after the rescue, he’s holding something he can use as a weapon. On the battlefield, it’s the guns. Specifically the big one he has taken to carrying like a baby, which I have no doubt he intends to use on Zola next time he sees him (he seems the poetic type to kill Zola with a gun taken from the place that tried to destroy him). In the bar, it’s the glass, which he only lets go of when Steve is present. He doesn’t want to ever be in a situation where he is bound down and shackled like an animal again, so he takes pains to make it as difficult as possible for anyone to get to him that way again.

Ye gods, this is perfect. And he’s so low-key about it that even though we see Steve carefully taking in the state of Bucky’s dapper uniform in the alley (“You get your orders?”), he spends very little time checking Bucky over once they’re away from the factory. Even in the bar scene, if I remember right, Bucky looks at Steve WAY more than Steve looks at Bucky. Steve doesn’t feel the need to examine Bucky closely—he’s always busy with something else—even as Bucky keeps his laser-focus on Steve.

Bucky slipped the extent of his trauma right past his best friend. Steve doesn’t seem to have any idea how fragile Bucky is, even though Bucky’s practically hanging a neon sign on it with these wardrobe changes.

Bucky is hiding his damage in plain sight.

That was the style at the time tho. Vets kept their trauma under wraps to the best of their ability and they were reticent to discuss it – even with other vets.

John Huston’s 1947 documentary, “Let There Be Light,” on the subject of soldiers being treated for PTSD was seized by the Army ahead of the premiere and it wasn’t released until 1981.

Steve’s response might seem insensitive but it’s historically accurate…

‘Captain America: Civil War’ Audio Commentary

I just want to point out the irony here—that as gratuitous as this scene is, it actually is character development. You can tell from the way Steve’s straining that he’s at his breaking point. He’s a super soldier, but there are limits to his strength and he’s teetering on the edge. Despite that, we one hundred percent believe Steve is willing to let himself get ripped in half here rather than let that helicopter go.

Why? When we all saw this scene in the first Civil War trailer, the Russos said Steve was fighting for a passionate reason. There’s only one person Steve would be fighting this hard for—Bucky. No one had any doubt. Seventy-some years ago, Steve failed to hold on to Bucky and it ruined them both. He’s not going to let him go again, and we see that internal struggle manifested here physically.

The interesting thing is—as heroically as this shot is framed—we can see this as valor or sheer, stubborn idiocy. After all, Steve is fighting a helicopter for Bucky and “Bucky,” brainwashed, just threw Steve down an elevator shaft and tried to kill most of his friends. The Bucky Steve is hanging on to here may or may not be the Bucky he actually wants to save. But Steve is taking a chance, risking it all on the belief that his friend is in there somewhere and if he can just hang on long enough, then they’ll both get through this.

It may be incidental, but the glowing lens flare here draws particular attention to Steve’s chest—assuming you’re not too entranced with his arms—and emphasizes where the core of the matter lies. Steve is being pulled in two directions and his heart is at the center of the conflict. If he’s smart and wants to save himself, it’s as easy as letting go (one hand or the other). But he’s Steve and this is Bucky and, no, he’s not going to let go.

So I was rewatching civil war and I’m laughing bc you know the part where steve just goes through one of bucky’s notebooks and finds a picture of himself in it and then the camera just pans to the side and bucky’s just standing there awkwardly like,,,, it’s so funny because you don’t even know how long he was there like either homeboy just got back from buying plums on his morning farmers market spree and used his assassin skills to quietly slip into his apartment all clandestine,,,,, maybe he had plans to bake some plum pie who knows but surprise bitch there’s steve going through his gay ass notebook like ‘wow good job barnes now he really knows you’re pining for him’ or he’s literally been in there the whole time doing god knows what and I just.
